Spotify Canvas not showing? Every setting to check and how to fix it

Spotify Canvas plays only in the Spotify mobile app, on iOS 12 or later or Android 6.0 or later; it never shows on the desktop app or the web player. If it doesn't show, open Settings and privacy, set Data Saver to Off under Data-saving and offline, and turn Canvas on under Content and display. Then check your phone's own data saver, and check that the song has a Canvas at all: not every song does.

Step by step

  1. Open the Spotify app on your phone. Canvas does not play on the desktop app or the web player.
  2. Tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy.
  3. Under Data-saving and offline, set Data Saver to Off.
  4. Under Content and display, turn Canvas on. If it is already on, turn it off and on again.
  5. Turn off your phone's own data saver (Android) or Low Data Mode (iPhone), update the Spotify app, then close and reopen it.

Questions

Why does Canvas show for my friends but not for me?

It is a setting on each phone. Check Data Saver and the Canvas switch in Spotify, and your phone's own data saver or Low Data Mode.

My song has no Canvas. How do I add one?

The artist or their team adds it in Spotify for Artists. If you don't have one yet, Living Cover turns your cover art into a moving loop, and the live preview is free.

Good to know

  • Canvas only plays for listeners in the countries Spotify lists in its help center, which include the US, Canada, Mexico and most of Latin America and Europe.
  • Artists: an upload fails if the file is even slightly outside Spotify's Canvas checklist. Spotify suggests trying the Spotify for Artists mobile app if the website upload fails.
  • Labels: with split rights to a track, you can add a Canvas only to the versions you own.
